DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Responsible for rendering high-quality antenatal and postnatal care to maximize the women’s health during and after pregnancy, detect problems early and manage or refer for any complications. Performs midwifery activities offering optimal midwifery care in accordance with the “Midwives Code of Practice” as per the Policies and Procedures of the organization

  • Takes complete health history and performs a complete physical examination, abdominal examination and palpation and vaginal examination of the pregnant patients.
  • Skills in obstetrics and broad knowledge of labour, delivery and postpartum and nursery care.
  • Provides complete antenatal care, including teaching and counselling patients and their husbands.
  • Demonstrates accountability for the quality of midwifery care and works closely with the Obstetricians and nursing team in overseeing holistic patient care delivery.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the patient’s emotional well-being is looked after and supports the patient through a healthy delivery.
  • Assists the Obstetrician in: 

    1. Conducting deliveries – spontaneous vaginal deliveries and instrumental assisted vaginal delivery like forceps or vacuum extraction. 
     

    2. Handling complicated cases e.g. PPH, APH, Cord Prolapsed, Asphyxiated newborn, etc.

  • Monitors patient on continuous CTG machine and evaluates labour progress through her interpretations of CTG tracings, patient’s complaints and vaginal examination findings. Reports any abnormalities to the relevant Obstetrician.
  • Comply with Patient Safety Goal to identify mother and baby correctly by ensuring correct I/D bands are applied to mother and newborn and not to be removed until discharge.
  • Receives caesarian section newborn in OT and provides immediate care.
  • Able to assist or resuscitate asphyxiated newborns before the arrival of the doctor in an emergency situation.
  • Assists, supervises and gives support to mothers especially first-time mothers regarding:
    Care for herself and newborn,
    Breast-feeding
    family planning.
  • Ensures relevant and accurate information is updated in the HIS especially delivery data, birth information, and charges.
  • Understands and carries out the nursing care in line with Vision and Mission Statements, Goals and Objectives that suit the scope of the Nursing Services.
  • Works shift duties or as assigned by Nurse Manager according to the Unit’s Operational Hours
  • Informs Nurse Manager when change occurs in circumstances that affect care standards.
  • This job description is subject to periodic review and may be changed anytime in consultation with the employee.
  • Performs any other job-related duties not specified in this job description when assigned by the immediate supervisor, including deployment and rotation to other nursing services
  • Assist the Nurse Manager in overseeing the smooth running of Labour & Delivery Services
  • Determine priority and plan care according to patient records.
  • Perform phlebotomy and administer an intravenous infusion for adult
  • Serve or administer medications safely and timely for the mother and baby as prescribed by doctors/consultants.
  • Receives and hands over reports of every patient in L&R services.
  • Assist with admission procedures and discharge of patients, including making appointments with the specialist clinic if necessary
  • Performs extra duties when called upon, especially in an emergency

HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

  • Takes personal responsibility for own professional development and keeps up to date with professional change and growth by maintaining mandatory learning hours.
  • Complete the Continuous Professionalism Development (CPD) requirement by active participation in CNE programme.
  • Complete yearly Core Competency Assessment
  • Participates in the teaching program of the unit/ward and orientation of new staff members to the ward routine.
  • Involves in the supervision of the Junior SRN, & Care Aide
  • Assists the Nurse Manager in appraising the job performance

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

  • Contributes suggestions in periodic revision and upgrading of Nursing Policies and Procedures and relevant work instructions.
    Checks DDA drugs with the off-going Nurse In-charge
  • Participates in the care, custody and administration of medications in accordance with Hospital Policies and Procedures.
    Checks daily and audits resuscitation trolley periodically as scheduled.
  • Ensure all staff complies with Prevention and Control of Infection, including implementation of surveillance activity in the unit and evidence of involvement.
  • Maintain confidentiality of the patient’s personal and medical history.

FACILITIES & EQUIPMENT

  • Assists the Nurse Manager in keeping accurate records of equipment, medical supplies and drugs in the unit.
  • Checks that all equipment in the unit is functioning well and serviced according to the PPM schedule.
  • Report to Bio-Medical personnel if any faulty and takes necessary action accordingly.
  • Assists in maintaining instruments and equipment by properly cleaning, handling, disinfecting and utilizing as directed.

SAFETY & QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

  • Fully receptive and supportive in the activities that contribute towards continuous improvement of nursing service, e.g.
  • QualityProgramme, Infection Control and Fire and Safety Program.
  • Conduct investigation and root cause analysis in any service incident, takes appropriate action and ensure completion of incident reports within the stipulated time frame.
  • Carries out duties as an employee as stipulated in Occupational Safety and Health Act and Regulations 1994:-
    a. To take reasonable care at work for the safety of yourself and other persons;
    b. To co-operate with your employer or any other person in the discharge of any duty;
    c. To wear or use any protective equipment or clothing the employer provides.
    d. To comply with any instruction or measure on occupational safety and health.
  • Ensures compliance with Patient safety goals as safety improvement measures recommended by World Alliance for Patient Safety.
  • Ensures the policies on Patient and Family Rights are addressed at all time
  • Complies with the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative Breastfeeding Policy and protects, promotes and supports Baby Friendly Hospital activities.
  • Ensures all staff adheres to Customer Delight Practices (SPP) at all times

EMPLOYEE SPECIFICATIONS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma/Certificate in Nursing and Registered with the Nursing Board of Malaysia with a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse and also registered with the Malaysian Nursing/Midwifery Board
  • Preferred Post-Basic qualification in a related field
  • Able to write and communicate in Bahasa Malaysia and English Language
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Willingness to work on scheduled hours, shifts, weekends, public holidays, on-call and anytime when called during an emergency.
