Staff Nurse (Post Basic ICU)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Summary Of Duties

Provide professional nursing care to patients in the assigned area. Ensure compliance with nursing, hospital, and USEC policies and procedures at all times. Keep the ophthalmologist, CNO, and manager informed of any incidents or situations that require nursing administrative involvement.

  • Understands and carries out the nursing care in line with Vision and Mission Statements, Goals and Objectives that suit the scope of the USEC Services.
  • Works shift duties or as assigned by the Manager according to the Unit’s Operational Hours.
  • This job description is subject to periodic review and may be changed anytime in consultation with the employee.
  • Performs any other job-related duties not specified in this job description when assigned by the immediate supervisor, including deployment and rotation to other services if needed.
  • Provide patient education (pre- and post-op care) for patients undergoing eye treatment or surgery.
  • Participates in the health education of patients and their families.
  • Able to perform basic eye assessment and examination such as visual acuity, measuring intraocular pressure, fundus scanning and photography as instructed by the ophthalmologist.
  • Operate ophthalmic diagnostic machines (e.g., auto-refractor, non-contact tonometer, optical biometry, fundus camera, OCT, visual field machine) as directed.
  • Assist ophthalmologist and optometrist during clinical examination, preparation of patient for surgery and procedures such as laser.
  • Participate in internal and external eye screening programme and community outreach activities when needed.
  • Determines nursing priorities and plans patient care according to patient’s needs and staff availability
  • Provides individualized holistic care to patients using the Nursing Process approach with proper nursing documentation in patients’ EMRs that is contemporaneous.
  • Reports all abnormal findings and progress of patients to the ophthalmologist.
  • Conducts regular rounds on all patients in the USEC to ascertain other additional needs; talks to patient/family members as an integral part of providing emotional support.
  • Establishes and develops effective communication with all disciplines, patients and relatives to achieve optimal patient satisfaction.
  • Attends and participates in unit meetings, dialogue sessions and hospital activities.
  • Act as administrative when needed for registration of patient, OT booking, patient appointment etc.
  • Carries out duties and responsibilities of the Manager in her or him absence as directed.
  • Ensure charges of equipment/consumable items into patient’s charges accordingly and check for completeness.
  • Responsible for checking and documenting the supply of sterile packs from CSSS and weekly checking for the integrity of the packaging.
  • Maintains and documents adequate supply of unit stock

Human Resource Development

  • Strictly adheres to the employee handbook, demonstrating punctuality, integrity and honesty when performing duties.
  • Attends hospital/Nursing orientation and CNE to achieve yearly CPD, responsible for own professional development.
  • A personal locker is for personal use only, and a routine inspection will be carried out by the manager.
  • Competency assessment, case presentation and compliance assessment are carried out on an annual basis.
  • Participates in the orientation and training of new staff members in the unit.
  • Involves in the supervision of the lower categories of staff: Care Aides.

Policies & Procedure

  • Contributes suggestions in periodic revision and upgrading of Policies and Procedures and relevant work instructions.
  • Checks DDA drugs daily, monitor and maintain the movement record.
  • Participates in the care, custody and administration of medications in accordance with Hospital Policies and Procedures including Counselling the patient on how to instill eye drops and medication storage.
  • Checks daily and audits resuscitation trolley periodically as scheduled.
  • Ensure all staff complies with Prevention and Control of Infection, including implementation of surveillance activity in the unit and evidence of involvement.
  • Maintain confidentiality of the patient’s personal and medical history.

Facility & Equipment

  • Operates/maintains specialized equipment assigned to the unit and provides assistance/guidance to new staff in their use.
  • Assists the Manager in keeping accurate records of equipment, medical supplies and drugs in the ward.
  • Checks that all equipment in the unit are functioning well and service according to PPM schedule.
  • Report to Bio Medical personnel if any faulty and takes necessary action accordingly.
  • Assists in maintenance of instruments and equipment by proper cleaning, handling, disinfect and utilizing as directed
  • Carries out cleaning activities in the unit prior to admission and discharge of the patient.

Safety And Quality Improvement Activities

  • Fully receptive and supportive in the activities that contribute towards continuous improvement of USEC service e.g. MSQH, Quality Assurance & Infection Control
  • Audit, Monitor and tracking all surveillance program that related to USEC services
  • Carries out duties as an employee as stipulated in Occupational Safety and Health Act and Regulations 1994: -
    1. To take reasonable care at work for the safety of yourself and other persons;
    2. To co-operate with your employer or any other person in the discharge of any duty;

Staff Nurse (OT Post Basic)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Provides direct patient care through the nursing process within hospital and unit policies, protocols and standards.

  • Assist Anaesthetist in induction and extubation of patient taking necessary precautions to ensure patient’s safety.
  • Observes and monitors patient under anaesthesia.
  • Ensure safe and quality care is being administered to patient during anaesthesia.
  • Cares for patient and intravenous fluids, drains on transferring of patient to Recovery Room. Hand over brief report of patient condition to Recovery Room Staff

Staff Nurse (Midwife)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Responsible for rendering high-quality antenatal and postnatal care to maximize the women’s health during and after pregnancy, detect problems early and manage or refer for any complications. Performs midwifery activities offering optimal midwifery care in accordance with the “Midwives Code of Practice” as per the Policies and Procedures of the organization

  • Takes complete health history and performs a complete physical examination, abdominal examination and palpation and vaginal examination of the pregnant patients.
  • Skills in obstetrics and broad knowledge of labour, delivery and postpartum and nursery care.
  • Provides complete antenatal care, including teaching and counselling patients and their husbands.
  • Demonstrates accountability for the quality of midwifery care and works closely with the Obstetricians and nursing team in overseeing holistic patient care delivery.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the patient’s emotional well-being is looked after and supports the patient through a healthy delivery.
  • Assists the Obstetrician in: 

    1. Conducting deliveries – spontaneous vaginal deliveries and instrumental assisted vaginal delivery like forceps or vacuum extraction. 
     

    2. Handling complicated cases e.g. PPH, APH, Cord Prolapsed, Asphyxiated newborn, etc.

  • Monitors patient on continuous CTG machine and evaluates labour progress through her interpretations of CTG tracings, patient’s complaints and vaginal examination findings. Reports any abnormalities to the relevant Obstetrician.
  • Comply with Patient Safety Goal to identify mother and baby correctly by ensuring correct I/D bands are applied to mother and newborn and not to be removed until discharge.
  • Receives caesarian section newborn in OT and provides immediate care.
  • Able to assist or resuscitate asphyxiated newborns before the arrival of the doctor in an emergency situation.
  • Assists, supervises and gives support to mothers especially first-time mothers regarding:
    Care for herself and newborn,
    Breast-feeding
    family planning.
  • Ensures relevant and accurate information is updated in the HIS especially delivery data, birth information, and charges.
  • Understands and carries out the nursing care in line with Vision and Mission Statements, Goals and Objectives that suit the scope of the Nursing Services.

  • Identify hazards in the workplace and provide solutions.
  • Treat emergency injuries.
  • Develop programs to maintain health and safety.
  • Identify work-related risks.
  • Document all injuries and illnesses.
  • Ensure that sufficient staff are available for the day and make the necessary.
  • Maintain the patient’s clinical records. Keep all information of patients in the strictest confidence.
  • Assist the doctors with procedures and treatments. Administer treatments including sterile procedures.
  • Administer medications according to hospital policy.
  • Practice economical use of equipment and supplies, informs proper authority of discrepancies and breakdown.
  • Attend and support education programs.
  • Order medical and pharmacy supplies according to the set par level and departmental needs.
  • Perform inventory and cleaning of equipment as scheduled.
  • Key in charges for nursing procedures/medical supplies and ward medications accurately and in timely manner.
  • Participate in departmental initiative /project for continuous improvement.
  • Assists in CSSD/ Operating Theatre/ Recovery Room when need arises.
  • Monitors and controls the Endoscopy Daycare Unit environment to prevent infection.
  • Physiologically monitors the patient during and after the endoscopy procedure.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the superiors.

JOB REQUIREMENT:

  • Diploma in Nursing / Degree in Nursing.
  • Registered Nurse with current nursing licence.
  • Valid nursing board registration.
  • Post qualification nursing experience.
  • Post-basic in Endoscopy Nursing is preferred.
  • Able to work in a multicultural team.
  • Maintain a positive attitude in a fast-paced environment.
  • Continue professional development activities.
  • Maintain meticulous records.
